Today’s post is a bit frivolous compared to the others. I have a betta. His name is Fish. He lives in a Hagen Betta Tank (it has a lovely blue dragon background) and I went crazy at Petco with my BillMeLater account and got some plastic gems and shells to serve as the gravel in his tank. He’s a blueish purple, and he’s quite the scrappy little guy.

My “babycat” (Tenzin is 15 months old and has a belly like Buddha), loves to lay on my desk and go nose-to-nose, as it were, with Fish. The betta swims in his tank, content within his acrylic walls to  look at the cat with a “you want a piece of me?” expression on his little fishy face. Sometimes, babycat rolls over and stretches out his paw in a classic, “play with me” expression. Sorry kitty, but Fish won’t play with you.

It’s funny how much a fish can keep you company. I work third shift, and while my sweetie often shares my same hours, every once in a while I’ll hear a clatter from Fish’s tank as he rearranges his plastic shells. I smile. He’s busy doing his fishy things and seems very happy.

Actually, I got him because I realized that I needed to be the betta. I needed to live within my acrylic walls, happy to swim around and not worry about anything. Fish doesn’t worry about babycat. He doesn’t worry that I won’t feed him. When I do, it’s yum food! (not just for him, but also for the cats who smell fish flakes and thinks they’re getting something good). He rests when he needs to and for the most part seems very content in his little 1/2 gallon cube. He’s quiet company, unless he’s flipping around his plastic shells looking for bits of food or perhaps interior decorating. He has two Buddha statues (also from petco) on top of his aquarium reminding me to be thankful and happy. And when the babycat comes across my desk, well, watching a cat and a fish go nose-to-nose is one of the most adorable sights you have ever seen.

Very cute. I’ve thought about getting a fish, but I’ve never owned one all by myself. don’t you have to clean their tanks often?
