Some of you may be aware that I was having email and website issues over the weekend. In fact, these are similar to the issues I’d had back in May. And they were caused by my attempts to move my site. Luckily, this weekend, I finally took the plunge and moved it.

Basically in a nutshell, by Sunday I had everything moved, my email back up and running, and I was one happy techy person. I made a note on my to do list to call 1&1 on Monday to cancel my hosting (since they’re online cancel form either canceled the whole shebang, including my domains, eep!no!). I cancelled it. No problem, and I was doing a little happy dance, which thankfully cannot be found on YouTube.

Well, a few hours later, I went to update my blog and got an error. My website suddenly, mysteriously, crazily, routed back to 1&1’s site, which, of course, now being cancelled, wasn’t there. And my email wasn’t working again.

After calling their tech support, and alas, speaking with someone who gives all of us help desk monkeys out there a bad name (Yes, I am a help desk monkey, aka IT help desk person), I learned that 1&1 changed my name servers BACK to theirs.

The bottom line: 1and1 changed my domain, without my permission, after I had cancelled my hosting.

Oh no. Oh hell no. If I don’t give you permission, you don’t touch. I don’t care what it is.

I will be working, as my domains expire, to move them away from 1and1 domains. I have a good recommendation from Celia Kyle (http://www.getcehosted.com/) and I suspect that’s who I will be using. But I also wanted to warn people that 1and1 has made these changes, and while it was an easy fix (reset the name servers and wait for them to propagate, approximately 24 hours since 1and1 takes FOREVER compared to other hosts to make those changes), I do not like the fact that a company can make those changes without my knowing. Icky.
